CW5-96 Circumferential TIG Welding System

Use:

Jet engine parts

Materials:

High nickel steels

Process:

DC GTAW (TIG) Tungsten Inert Gas Welding

Capacity: 5,000 lbs. (2250 kg) maximum part weight
96" (2,500 mm) part length (fixtures available with up to 240" (6,000 mm) part length.)
30" (750 mm) maximum diameter (extra height fixtures available to order)

Description: The system shown is based upon a standard CW5-96 circumferential fixture. It has a powered headstock with variable speed rotation and an air-operated tailstock that can be positioned and locked at any point along the bed of the machine.

Behind the fixture, a side beam track is located; a carriage rides on this track and carries a complete set of TIG welding equipment that includes an arc length control with sequencer as well as a cold wire feeder.

The fixture includes some unique features:

Headstock Tooling: This is an air-operated expanding tool. The part is slid over the tool and, when both edges are in position, the tool is expanded. This increases its diameter and causes it to round up the parts and bring them into line. The tool also provides gas backing to the weld.

Cradle Lift: The parts to be welded can be placed on the cradle lift which locates them on the exact centerline of rotation. After they are clamped into position and, prior to welding, the cradle lifts are lowered to provide clearance for the rotating parts. They are again raised at the end of the weld to aid in the unloading of the finished part.

Slide-Away Tailstock: The tailstock is mounted in such a way that it can be moved back across the axis of the fixture. This is done without having to unlock its position on the bed. With the tailstock in the retracted position, the welded part can be removed from the expanding tooling.

Tailstock Tooling: This is designed, not only to hold parts together for welding, but also to hold a TIG welding torch and insert it inside parts for internal welding.

Applications:

The CW5 can also be used for the following applications:

Water tanks
Chemical storage vessels
Nuclear waste containers
Liquid fuel tanks for rockets
Aero-engine components
