Application:
Splicing of flat sheet for the shipbuilding industry.
Material:
Carbon steel and Aluminum
Process:
Dual GMA (MIG) welding.
Capacity:
Sheets up to 40 ft (12 meter) long.
Material thickness up to 1/2" (12.5 mm).
Description:
Designed for flatsheet welding, the seam welder has a solid base providing a high degree of rigidity. The base structure is fitted with hydraulically operated centering devices. When operated, these devices move upwards and inwards until their front edge is on the seam welder centerline. The sheet can then be powered in on the sheet feed conveyor, aligned against these devices and then be clamped into position.
As the system is designed for both steel and aluminum applications, different backup inserts are required. The base structure includes an insert holder which can be turned to present either of the inserts to the welding position. This considerably reduces the changeover time from one material to the other.
Two sets of welding equipment are supplied, each is mounted on a powered carriage that rides on a heavy-duty track that has been stress-relieved and machined. Hardened vee-way tracks provide smooth carriage travel. Each of the weld heads has GMA (MIG) welding facilities. Each is mounted on a motorized slide providing cross seam and arc gap adjustment facilities. One carriage starts welding at the end of the seam, the other starts in the middle. This halves the time required for the welding of a complete plate length.
Weld control is effected from a remote control station situated at the end of the seamwelder. A color, video camera and lens assembly mounted on each carriage gives the operator a clear view of the weld area before, during and after the welding operation.
